Deep Well Water Level Indicator Led Alarm Water Level Sensor

Hydroponic growers using the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) rely on a shallow, continuously flowing stream of nutrient solution through sloped channels containing plant roots. The correct liquid level in the channel is critical: if too high, roots drown for lack of oxygen; if too low, roots dry out and nutrient uptake stops.

A typical NFT system has dozens or hundreds of channels, each needing consistent level. The NFT Channel Level Manager uses a low voltage capacitive or optical level switch at the outlet of each channel (or a single adjustable weir) to maintain a constant 2 to 5 millimeter deep film. It integrates with the recirculating pump to adjust flow rate or alerts the grower if multiple channels show abnormal level (indicating a pump problem or channel blockage). This system eliminates the most common cause of NFT crop failure: inconsistent nutrient film depth.

Controlled Environment Agriculture Technology
  • Individual Channel Level Switch (Optional): For high value crops, each channel can have a capacitive level switch mounted at the channel outlet. The switch detects when the nutrient solution depth falls below a threshold (e.g., 2 millimeters) and sends a signal to the central controller. The controller then increases pump speed or opens a bypass valve.
  • Adjustable Weir with Ultrasonic Level Sensor (Centralized): A more cost effective approach for many channels is to use an adjustable weir at the end of a common return gutter, with an ultrasonic level sensor measuring the upstream water depth. The controller adjusts the recirculating pump speed (via variable frequency drive) to maintain the desired weir height, which correlates to channel depth. This maintains consistent flow across all channels fed by the same pump.
  • Pump Speed Control with Variable Frequency Drive: The system includes a VFD on the recirculation pump. When the level drops (e.g., due to increased plant water uptake as they mature), the VFD increases pump speed slightly. When level rises (e.g., after harvest when transpiration decreases), it reduces speed. This closed loop control keeps the nutrient film depth within ±0.5 millimeters of setpoint.
  • Alarm for Channel Blockage or Pump Failure: If the level sensor detects a low level condition for more than a configurable period (e.g., 5 minutes) despite the pump running at maximum speed, it triggers an alarm for blocked channel (e.g., roots clogging the outlet). If the level remains low even when the pump is commanded to run, it indicates pump failure. The system sends an urgent text alert to the grower.
NFT Hydroponic Operation Workflow
  1. Channel Calibration and Setpoint Entry: Growers measure the typical water depth in a properly operating channel (using a ruler) and enter the target depth into the controller. They also set the minimum and maximum allowable depths.
  2. Automatic Level Control with Pump VFD: The system runs continuously. The grower receives a daily report of average depth, pump speed, and any alarms.
  3. Root Health Monitoring via Level Trend: A gradual increase in pump speed required to maintain depth over several weeks indicates increased root mass or root clogging. The grower can schedule channel cleaning before complete blockage occurs.
