Mapping Subsurface Hydrology in 4D

Traditional soil moisture sensors provide point measurements at shallow depths, missing the larger picture. The SAA system utilizes passive seismic interferometry, a technique where the subtle ambient vibrations from wind, micro-tremors, and even farm machinery are used to continuously measure changes in seismic wave velocity. Since wave velocity is highly sensitive to water content, this creates a cost-effective, non-invasive method to map soil moisture in 3D, over time (4D). Farmers can visualize how water from an irrigation event percolates through different soil layers, identifies preferential flow paths or hardpans, and precisely monitors drainage and evapotranspiration rates, allowing for irrigation schedules that match the actual plant uptake and soil conditions.
