Environmental site assessments demand defensible data. The DZD-8 Multi-function Full Wave DC Electron Meter delivers repeatable resistivity and IP measurements that stand up to regulatory review. Whether you are mapping a contaminant plume, locating a landfill boundary, or imaging a saltwater intrusion, this instrument provides the evidence you need.

Why full waveform recording matters for environmental work. Traditional meters average signals, hiding transient noise from nearby pumps, traffic, or telluric currents. The DZD-8 records 1KHz waveforms of both current and potential. You can visually inspect each measurement. If noise is present, you see it. You can also recalculate polarizability using different delay times – a critical feature when the secondary field from clay or organic contamination is weak.

Accuracy specifications ensure defensible reporting. Voltage resolution 5nV, accuracy ≤0.1% for signals >1mV. Current resolution 10nA. Apparent polarizability error ≤±0.2%. These specs exceed typical environmental requirements. When a regulator asks about data quality, you can point to these numbers.

The instrument measures parameters that characterize contamination.

  • Resistivity distinguishes clean sand/gravel (high) from clay or leachate (low).

Field workflow for a typical site assessment.

  1. Lay out a 2D ERT line across the suspected plume. Use centralized or distributed cables.

  2. Press “Res” to check ground resistance. Fix any poor electrodes (water or reposition).

  3. Create a new project: name it, select 2D ERT, set electrode spacing and layout.

  4. Press “Measure”. The DZD-8 automatically sequences through electrode pairs.

  5. The screen builds a pseudo-section in real time.

  6. After survey, press “7” to check data quality. Retest any questionable points with “9”.

  7. Transfer data via USB to the included software.

Rolling measurement extends profiles without moving all electrodes. After completing one section, the system prompts you to move a subset of cables. You can survey hundreds of meters with a single cable set – efficient for long pipelines or shoreline assessments.

3D ERT for detailed source zone imaging. Use S, U, W, or Wang cable layouts. The instrument handles up to 60 or more electrodes depending on configuration. The 3D preprocessor lets you edit data, delete bad electrodes, and export to inversion software. The final 3D model can be contoured in GIS or CAD.

Data security and chain of custody. All raw waveforms are saved on the internal SD card (16G to 64G optional). USB transfer is simple – the instrument appears as a drive. No proprietary formats that require expensive software to read. The provided analysis software exports to ASCII, Res2Dinv, Res3Dinv, and Surfer. Keep the raw files as your audit trail.

The instrument is rugged for industrial sites. IP67 waterproof – hose it off after a dirty survey. Working temperature -20°C to +60°C. The 6.4 inch high-brightness LCD is readable in direct sun. The enclosure withstands vibration from trucks and generators.

Power options for long days. Internal 16.8V 12.5Ah battery lasts 20 hours. For multi-day assessments, bring a 12V external battery and connect via the charge port. The instrument displays remaining charge as a percentage. Below 15%, the screen shows orange – time to plug in.

Transmitter capabilities for conductive environments. Maximum 1400V and 6A, 7500W output. In urban settings with low ground resistance, you may need only 50-100V. But for resistive dry sand or gravel, higher voltage pushes current through. Pulse width adjustable from 1 to 64 seconds – longer pulses improve signal-to-noise for deep or noisy sites.

Troubleshooting common field issues – environmental edition.

  • High VP error: Usually means low voltage (<1mV). Increase MN spacing or use longer pulse.

  • Current too low: Dry ground. Water the A/B electrodes or add multiple stakes per pole.

  • Current output protection: AB short circuit or very low ground resistance. Reduce voltage.

  • Erratic readings: Look for nearby power lines or cathodic protection systems. Move line perpendicular to interference source.
    The manual includes a four-resistor test (1kΩ, 100Ω, 1kΩ in series) to verify instrument channels. Perform this test before each major project.
